1,400 Austrian volunteers of the International Brigade—34 of them women—defended the Spanish Republic against the coup-staging military under Franco in the years 1936–1939. The flag of the 11th International Brigade was handed over to the battalion “February 12” for their efforts.
Two women resistance fighters took part in saving the flag, bringing it via France and Yugoslavia to Vienna..
