Eleven years after the death of his grandfather, Or Aleksandrowicz found a suitcase full of negatives in his grandfather’s former apartment in Tel Aviv. When his father began to scan the material, they both realized that they had come upon an incredible treasure: thousands of pictures never seen before, which had been taken by Ze’ev Aleksandrowicz, Or’s grandfather, in the 1920s and 1930s. This photographic time capsule not only opens a window to unknown aspects of the photographer’s life as a young man, but also offers new and unexpected insights into life in the many places he had visited. Perhaps the most fascinating were Aleksandrowicz’s photographs from Palestine, which differ greatly from the Palestine photos of many other contemporary photographers.
In his lecture, Or Aleksandrowicz talks about the discovery of his grandfather’s photographic oeuvre, about the development of the Ze’ev Aleksandrowicz Collection since 2003 and about the new possibilities these images provide for delving deeper into the history of Palestine in the 1930s.
