Lecture in english

The Warsaw cultural philosopher Andrzej Leder analyzed in his historical essay the core of the social upheavals of East Central Europe between 1939 and 1956: the murder of Polish Jews under German occupation and the destruction of the landed gentry as a consequence of the socialist order imposed after 1945. Leder explains in his introductory lecture, why it was a revolution that continues to be felt today.

Following the lecture, the author will discuss with the author of the preface to the German edition, Felix Ackermann (Warsaw), the lasting effect of his book in contemporary Poland and the continuing effects of the war and post-war events described by him to this day.

The appearance of the Polish original triggered a broad discussion in 2014, because Andrzej Leder shows in it the systematic fading out of the subject character of the actors in the course of the "Polish revolution". He explains the contradictory perception of a participation in these processes that was not caused by German and Soviet rule: All the inhabitants of Poland were confronted directly with the violence of the occupiers and had to act accordingly. In the present analysis, Leder sees the starting point for a late awakening that can end the "waking dream" of Polish society diagnosed by him.
