Elżbieta Zawacka "Zo" (1909 - 2009) was a polish mathematician, educator, resistance fighter and messenger and envoy of the commander-in-chief of the Home Army during the Second World War. During the Second World War, she belonged to the "cichociemni", the "silent and invisible". This cryptonym refers to those Polish soldiers who were flown from England to occupied Poland at night from 1941 to 1944 and landed in Poland by parachute jump. One of them - the only woman - was Elżbieta Zawacka. During the Second World War, Zawacka established courier routes between Poland and the UK as a courier and emissary.
After the Second World War, she resumed her pedagogical work. Her specialty was Andragogy (adult education). At a time when the first computers were still occupying entire rooms, she was already promoting e-learning. As Andragogin she worked at the Pedagogical University in Gdańsk and at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. After her retirement devoted herself to historical research and social activities. In this way she was instrumental in researching and honoring the fate of Home Army soldiers. She co-founded the World Army Home Army Association and was the founder of the Pomeranian Archives of the Home Army Foundation in Toruń. In 2006 she was promoted to brigadier general for her services in the resistance. Zawacka died on 10 January 2009 in Toruń, where she was buried with military honors, as they are entitled to deceased in the rank of general.
Katarzyna Minczykowska, dr. phil, was employed in the third year of her history studies at the Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń by Prof. Elżbieta Zawacka in the Pomeranian Archives of the Home Army in Toruń directed by the latter, where she was employed as a lecturer, archivist, secretary and vice president of the board is.
