What is Limmud?

Limmud is a volunteer-driven, egalitarian, pluralist Jewish peer-learning experience that started in Great Britain 40 years ago, and has spread to Jewish communities across the globe. At Limmud, all participants are equal; conferences are open to all who wish to learn; participants are drawn from all backgrounds, ages and degrees and forms of Jewish observance; they select the sessions they wish to attend; no events are compulsory. All lecturers and presenters are volunteers; all participants and presenters pay a conference participation fee.

Limmud FSU

Based on this unprecedently successful model, Limmud FSU was created over 10 years ago to address the specific needs of Russian-speaking Jews in the countries of the former Soviet Union (FSU), Russian-speaking immigrants to Israel, and Russian-speaking Jewish émigrés to various countries around the globe. Limmud FSU is heavily dependent on philanthropic support, for many of the audiences to whom its festivals reach out, are unable to cover the costs of their participation.

Limmud FSU brings together and empowers Russian-speaking Jews of all ages, with an emphasis on young adults who are interested in exploring their Jewish identity and learning about their heritage. By providing open and welcoming opportunities to reconnect to the Jewish world, Limmud FSU is revitalizing Jewish communities and culture; deepening involvement in Jewish communal life; and empowering activists to become the next generation of Russian-speaking Jewish leaders.

The first Limmud FSU festival took place in Moscow in 2006; since then, over 70 events have been mounted by 13 groups in 9 countries, and have impacted 55,000. Each festival is made up of intellectually stimulating lectures, workshops, spiritual experiences, literary readings, and musical performances by educators, journalists, politicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and musicians – drawn from within the Limmud FSU community – on a huge variety of topics, with a special program of age-appropriate activities for children. Programs are 100% volunteer-designed and implemented, and resonate with participants because they are developed by people from the same background.

Limmud FSU Europe

The first pan-European Limmud FSU festival was held in UK in February 2017 and brought together over 700 Russian-speaking Jews from more than 20 countries. We plan to hold the next event in Vienna, on February 28 – March 1 2020, for least 700. It will be held in partnership with the local Jewish community, and we expect it to be addressed by international figures from the Jewish world, including Matthew Bronfman, Limmud FSU International Steering Committee chair; Aaron Frenkel, Limmud FSU president, Rabbi Marc Schneier from USA, Israel’s ambassador to Austria; IKG President Oskar Deutsch,  etc.
