Memorial and Liberation Celebration Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial on 5 May and Celebration of Joy on 8 May

On Sunday, 5 May 2019, the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp marks its 74th anniversary. On the occasion of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp, the International Commemoration and Liberation Celebration takes place in the Mauthausen Memorial. This year’s theme is “Never number. Always human. ” The International Liberation Celebration is by far the largest commemoration and liberation celebration in the world. Altogether more than 90 commemorative events take place in the network of the MKÖ 2019.

To commemorate the victims and the joy of liberation from Nazi terrorism, the Mauthausen Committee Austria (MKÖ), in cooperation with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, is organizing the Festival of Joy for the seventh time on May 8, 2019 with a free concert and a speech by contemporary witnesses Shaul Spielmann at Wiener Heldenplatz. On May 8, 1945, the German Wehrmacht capitulated and the Second World War ended in Europe. In addition to the Liberation Day, the Festival of Joy in 2019 will also be dedicated to Europe and human rights. This year, for the first time, the bow to the modern is curious – Conchita sings the “Ode to the Joy” by Ludwig van Beethoven.
