In 1927 the premiere of "Mahagonny - ein Songspiel" took place as a commissioned work of the music festival "Deutsche Kammermusik Baden-Baden". It was Kurt Weill's first collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. Caspar Neher designed the stage set as a boxing ring, Brecht directed - the performance evoked enthusiasm from critics as well as protest from the audience.
