ADA YONATH
Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel
With this lecture, the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Center for Israel Studies in Vienna will start
a joint lecture series aiming to strengthen the scientific exchange between Austria and Israel.
The lecture series will be opened by Ada Yonath, Martin S. and Helen Kimmel Professor of Structural Biology and Director of the Helen and Milton A. Kimmelman Center for Biomolecular Structure and Assembly at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. In 2009, Ada Yonath received the Nobel
Prize in Chemistry for her studies on the structure and function of the ribosome, along with Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Thomas A. Steitz.
In her talk, Ada Yonath will focus on a molecular prebiotic bonding entity that may represent an ancient
RNA machine, which could be the kernel around which life originated. This machine is still functioning in all living cells of all organisms. The mechanistic and genetic applications of this finding will be discussed.
After the event, the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Center for Israel Studies will host a reception
in the Aula of the Academy.
Please register by September 30, 2016.
Unregistered participants will be admitted if space permits.
