As the original Jewish food and the sole food that practising Jews are still obliged to eat, matzoh has played an outsized role in defining and determining what makes a given food or dish “Jewish,” as distinct from something that Jews just like to eat. Along with matzoh, we will also look at cholent and kugel, two other iconic Yiddish foods. Where matzoh provides an ideological framework for all Jewish food, cholent is the matrix within which many typically Yiddish dishes were born, and kugel is the most prominent of its offspring. We will look at all three dishes and their role in Yiddish life and folklore. Michael Wex lebt als Schriftsteller, Entertainer und als einer der bekanntesten Jiddischisten der Welt in Toronto. Sein Werk umfasst Romane, Theaterstücke, Übersetzungen (aus dem Jiddischen, Hebräischen und Aramäischen: Wex hat die einzig autorisierte jiddische Fassung der „Dreigroschenoper“ geschaffen) und wissenschaftliche Schriften zur jiddischen Sprache und Kultur, u.a. „Born To Kvetch: Yiddish Language and Culture in All Its Moods“, New York 2005.
