In the backcountry of war - waiting for the end. In the autumn of 1918, Alfred Kiekeritz, officer of the Royal Polish Army, was stationed in Turka, a Galician place behind the front lines, to guard Russian prisoners of war. The highlight of the day is the train of goods passing the station. The tuberculosis-affected lieutenant lives in a small Jewish hotel where, in addition to his cough, he is also bothered by bedbugs, while he is rather indifferent waiting for the end of the war. The film version of the novel by Andrzej Kuśniewicz delicately describes the end-time mood in a doomed epoch. The fortress town of Przemyśl, located in south-east Poland, was a hotly disputed bridgehead on the Galician front, which changed owners repeatedly.
