FLATLAND (2019, 117 Min, Orig. with Subtitles)
As the wedding night ends with rape and murder in a nightmare for the naive young bride, Natalie leaves behind everything with her pregnant girlfriend Poppie and goes on the run into the unknown and the search for personal freedom. But before her lies only a country that soon shows itself to be boundlessly brutal and unyielding, as well as its men. Persecuted by the past and their aimlessness, the two women are soon on the heels of the policewoman Beauty Cuba, who seeks more in the murder case, however, to cope with her personal past than just righteousness in the drab desert landscape of Karoo.
With rich pictures, director Jenna Bass and FLATLAND bring together the stories of three women in an unusual road movie. A film showing a split and unbridled country in the middle of the mythical landscape of South Africa. A social drama that no longer plays the myth of the South African “Rainbow Nation”, in which skin color, gender and social status play no role, in haunting shots.
